I hear people say all the time that they can't get their kids to read or that their kids dislike reading. These comments make me sad. I usually respond with suggestions of non-traditional reading material in a subject that their child enjoys. Some people may not consider things like comics and magazines reading, they are and they count. A graphic novel based on a favorite video game, movie or television show, yes that counts too. I think the most important thing to remember is that reading should be a pleasurable escape not a forced chore. If kids are exposed to subject matter that is interesting to them then who knows where it will lead them. I'm lucky that both of my children love to read so I have not had this struggle in my own family. This may be because I have always shared my own love of reading with them, from spending time at the library exploring the shelves or turning off the television and reading books together.
